Check Out Kevin Smiths New Film, Cop Out

By Aurelia Coffey

Many of the true Kevin Smith di-hard fans are skeptical of this film. It is the first film that Kevin Smith has directed, and not written himself, and it is also his first film by a major studio. But those who really know his work will still see the little things in this movie Cop Out that make Kevin Smith movies in their own league.

Can you picture these two actors working together as police officers, Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis? Surprisingly they worked amazingly well together. They both play police officers for New York City, and have a very hilarious method of working together which you will see immediately in the beginning of the movie. In many spots of the movie, it looks like Bruce Willis is trying to keep from laughing the entire time with Tracy Morgan and Sean William Scott.

The plot of the movie is that both of the main characters are police officers. They are placed on probation for failing to catch a criminal and cause a mass neighborhood gun fight they are suspended with out pay for a month. However, Bruce Willis' character, Jimmy, needs that money to go towards his only daughter and child's wedding. In order to pay for the wedding he decides to sell one of his prized possessions, his 1952 Andy Pafko baseball card. Later on in the movie, Jimmy is robbed while he is going to appraise and sell his card by Sean William Scott's character, Dave. Many will remember Sean William Scott from the various American Pie movies. He definitely continues in his humorous role on this movie.

And guess who plays Jimmy's ex-wife's new husband, the one and only Jason Lee, that many of the Smith followers should remember from all of his other films. As usual, Lee plays the perfect scumbag! Jimmy insists on selling the card to get the money to pay for the wedding so Lee's character, Roy does not take all the credit for it.

With all the major events going on in the film and twists that you could never expect, somehow the two police officers end up getting mixed up with a huge drug ring. And with out spoiling the entire ending of the film, you will have to see the movie to know what happens next. Just think, how does one go from selling a baseball card, to a drug ring?

For those true followers of Smith, you can still get that feel that it is one of his movies. The hilarious sexual jokes, the way it was filmed and even the music chosen to undertone the film itself, it absolutely speaks Kevin Smith. And if that is not reasoning enough for you, he chose to direct it because of the two cops relationship reminded him of Dante and Randal.

It was originally released in the United States in February 26, 2010 and then in the United Kingdom in May 21, 2010. Before it came out on DVD, it had grossed about 53 million with a budget of only 37 million to work with. It is not a huge blockbuster, but one definitely worth your time viewing.

If you are wanting a hilarious, shoot'em up, out of the ordinary cop movie, seeing Cop Out is a must. It runs for 107 minutes total and it will be 107 minutes you will not regret.
